Crowns and Bridges
A crown is essentially a porcelain cap that goes over a tooth. It is used very commonly to help protect weakened tooth structure that is extensively decayed, fractured, or is at high risk for fracture. In some instances, a crown can be used to restore esthetics.
A bridge is very similar to a crown. A bridge not only protects weakened tooth structure but also helps replace a missing tooth or teeth in a short span. It incorporates crowning the adjacent teeth next to a space, which is filled with a pontic (a prosthetic tooth) and is a fixed restoration meaning that it is non-removable.
Crowns and bridges generally involve two appointments. During the first appointment, a tooth or teeth are “prepped” and an impression is taken. The impression is then sent to a lab for the crown or bridge to be made. The second appointment involves fitting the crown or bridge into place and permanently cementing it.
It is very important to understand that there is still tooth structure underneath a crown or a bridge. These teeth still need to be diligently brushed and flossed around in order to ensure longevity.
